The Department of Economic History at Stockholm University announces one vacant position in the doctoral programme in International Relations with an orientation towards East Asian international politics. The ideal candidate should have an interest in and documented experience of, analysing international relations in Northeast Asia. The candidate must have demonstrated excellent skills in academic written English. Additional merits include capacity to work in a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and to communicate research findings to wider audiences beyond academia.

Project description
The PhD project is part of the larger research project ‘International relations 2.0: Knowledge, memory and power on the Internet in East Asia’ directed by Associate Professor Karl Gustafsson at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs and funded by a research grant from the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg foundation. The project explores the impact that the Internet has had on international power relations in East Asia. The position is mainly financed through a grant. The PhD student will receive a tax-exempt grant up to three years and will be covered by insurance via Kammarkollegiet. For the fourth year of the education the doctoral student will be employed. The position will be based at Stockholm University but will also have a second workplace at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits (HECs), of which 60 HECs must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

The Board of the Department may give exceptions to the requirement of general entry requirement if there are special circumstances following HF 7:39.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicants must have

  1. Completed First Level education in International Relations or equivalent education of at least, 90 HECs, and completed Second Level education in International Relations or equivalent education of at least 30 HECs, of which at least 15 HECs comprise independent essay work.
  2. Completed higher education specialised in theoretical subjects relevant to the Third Level programme comprising another 60 HECs, or equivalent education.
  3. Sufficient knowledge of English to allow studies of academic literature written in English.

Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship. The primary assessment criteria in appointing a doctoral student should be the capacity to benefit from the training.

Selection
The selection is based on the applicant’s ability to successfully pursue the research education. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates’ documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, independence in analysis and planning of earlier work, the ability to construct research problems and precision in earlier work and in the research plan, documented ability to work within given time frames, methodological and scientific awareness, the ability to have a critical perspective on the research material, the ability to organize the material according to relevant conceptual and analytical tools, the ability to conduct an original and scientific analysis of the material, good communication and cooperation skills, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, independence and written and oral proficiency in English. Ability to engage in Swedish for departmental administrative purposes within two years is desirable. Knowledge in at least one of the regional languages (Chinese, Japanese or Korean) is a particular merit for this position.

Terms of employment
The program is four years. During the first three years the doctoral student is financed by stipend, and during the fourth year he/she will be employed. The doctoral students are expected to conduct their education full time and actively participate in the department’s activities. The position begins on August 28, 2017. The position can be held at the longest for 48 months, full time. The doctoral student should chiefly conduct research studies, but the position can be combined with conducting departmental duties such as teaching or administration. At the most this will be 20 per cent of full time, and the period as a doctoral student will be prolonged correspondingly but only up until five years.
